VAT on Invoices
Sellers must add VAT to invoices. VAT-registered buyers can deductthe VAT they pay as input tax — only the net difference goes to the treasury.
Example: Adding and Removing VAT
Say a product's net (VAT-exclusive) price is 1,000 TL at 20% VAT. The VAT is 1,000 × 0.20 = 200 TL and the VAT-inclusive price is 1,200 TL. To go back from an inclusive 1,200 TL to net, divide by 1.20 → 1,000 TL — multiplying by 0.80 is wrong. At 10% the inclusive price would be 1,100 TL, and at 1% it would be 1,010 TL.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong method to remove VAT: Divide the inclusive price by (1 + rate); do not multiply by the rate.
- Applying the wrong rate: Basic food is 1%, some goods/services 10%, most goods 20%. Identify the product group correctly.
- Forgetting input-tax deduction: VAT-registered businesses can deduct VAT on purchases; only the net difference goes to the treasury.
